Broken Rosaries QUESTION from Johnna Murphy December 29, 2000 Is there anything special for one to do when disposing of a rosary that is beyond repair? I realise that a rosary is just string and plastic beads, but since there is a crucifix attached, it doesn't seem right to just throw it in the garbage. Am I just being silly about the whole thing?
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, O.L.S.M. on March 4, 2001 Dear Mrs. Murphy:
Once a sacramental (example: the rosary) falls apart or is otherwise damaged and no longer recognizable (example: as a rosary) the blessing upon it ceases and you can merely through it away. The Crucifux, however, I would keep. The rest can be thrown away.
