Faith/Spirituality Forum: child born out of wedlock, divorce and remarriage
child born out of wedlock, divorce and remarriage QUESTION from Julie September 17, 2001 I am catholic and I had my daughter out of wedlock when i was 18 years old. I then married her father, who is not catholic when i was 23 years old at the justice of the peace office. I was not married in a church.
I now am divorced and I am dating a catholic. If we decide to get married will I be able to be married in the catholic church? My mother told me that my previous marriage did not count since i was not married in a church.
Will i also have to be annulled?
Is there any stipulations since I have a child also?
THanks
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius, OLSM on September 10, 2001 Dear Miss Julie:
You need to discuss this with your parish priest or with the diocese marriage tribunal. Whether or not you need an annulment depends upon many factors. The Marriage Tribunal will be able to give you a definitive answer.
There are no stipulations because you have a child. That has no bearing on it.
