ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius on August 6, 1999 Dear Mrs. Joy:
Thanks for your question. As it happens I use to be a Southern Baptist myself -- a preacher even.
The differences between Southern Baptists and Catholics are mostly in the areas that one would expect. IT would take an entire book to answer your question. Below are some of the areas of differences:
Sola Scriptura (the Bible Alone) vs. the Bible and Sacred Tradition
The authority of the Pope and of a hierarchial church
When the Catholic Church was founded
The nature of Communion
Baptism as a sacrament
The existence of 7 sacraments or not
The authority of priest to absolve sin in the Sacrament of Confession
the nature of the priesthood
the issues of the Communion of the Saints (i.e. Blessed Virgin Mary)
Use of artwork in the Church, etc.
There is a good book that deals directly with this subject called, How the Catholic Church is the Same adn How it is Different from Other Christian Churches by Franklin J. Dailey, M.D.
I will be putting this entire book online as soon as I can. In the meantime you can order the book from the Catholic Society of Evangelists, 22797 Barton Rd., Ste. #117, Grand Terrace, CA 92313 Phone: 919-825-0377
Also, if you look at the online book, Beginning Apologetics, you will see most of the areas that Protestants have problem with in Catholic Teaching, and what the answers are to those questions.
God Bless.
