Battling Spiritual Attacks QUESTION from Michele April 27, 1999 I don't know where to begin. First, I will tell you that I was raised a Catholic, but then fell away and delved myself into witchcraft. I've had many evil spiritual experiences. In the past couple of years, I have turned my life and will over to God. I am very happy this way, but it is a struggle nevertheless. I am having one right now. I don't think this struggle is ever going to end. Once I worked for the Devil and now I work for God working in a pro-life shelter and counseling those who are contemplating abortion. I am spreading the word. The devil may be unhappy with me and sending out his demons to try to get me back???? I'm not sure what is going on. But it tests my faith to the very limits. It is very draining. Is this true spiritual warfare? And, will it last my whole life? Truly God is on my side and lets me know He is. And I also have a very special bond with the Blessed Mother. What do you know, if anything about this and how can it be handled? How do I get them to leave me alone?
ANSWER by John-Paul Ignatius on May 7, 1999 Dear Michele:
First of all I praise God that you were delivered from the falsehood of witchcraft. We will certainly be in prayer for you in your new life with God.
The devil never likes it when people leave him – he is a bitter divorcee. Because of that bitterness it is certainly possible that he will do what he can to bother you and to discourage you in your new life with God. His motivation, of course, is to get you back, and if he can’t do that, to make you miserable.
But remember, God says in 1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. Buy this does not mean that it will not be a struggle, of course. That is why the Church and your fellow Christians are here – to stand beside you and support you and lift you up in the Lord.
What you need to do is to stay close to the Lord. That means visiting the Blessed Sacrament in adoration frequently if possible, partaking of our Lord in the Sacrament of Eucharist frequently, and going to confession at least once per month.
In addition to this, living a life of devotion such as praying a daily rosary and developing devotion to various Saints that might be helpful to you.
I would suggest a devotion to St. Dymphna who is the patron saint of spiritual problems.
Also, I would pray prayers of renunciation and other spiritual warfare prayers that might be needed. You will find a collection of such prayers at the following URL:

God bless, and we are praying for you.
